What type of finish should I use?
If you love the red cedar colour and want to keep your furniture looking new and prevent coffee stains, spills and fingerprints, we recommend a wood protector Rust-Oleum “Varathane Natural Oil” (not to be confused with Polyurethane) as shown on our Adirondack Furniture images. Varathane Natural Oil brings out the natural colours and grain in the wood. Natural Oil protector should be re-applied once per year.
If you want longer lasting durable finish, we recommend Sikken Cetol 1, colour # 078. Sikken is a marine oil based stain with long lasting effects and UV protection. We recommend 3 coats for the first time application, a fine sanding with 120 grid sandpaper before the 3rd application. Please read the label and follow manufacturers instructions.
Do I need to treat my cedar Adirondack Furniture?
The cedar we use is 100% defect free, edge grain with distinct – striking and unique colourings, varying from yellowish to dark chocolate. Western Red Cedar resists the elements and, if left natural, will weather to a beautiful silver grey. The rich natural oil content in cedar allows the wood to combat a wide variety of adverse environmental conditions making it an ideal choice for outdoor furniture. All of our products are sold without finish.
You do not need to treat your furniture with anything. Anything you choose to do to your furniture is decorative. The cedar is naturally durable and does not need any extra treatment. We found many of our customers leave their furniture natural, so it is a personal preference whether or not to apply a finish.
As with all wooden outdoor furniture some maintenance is required, we recommend 2 simple steps; tighten screws and bolts and it will definitely prolong the life of your Tofino Cedar Furniture.

A few facts about our Cedar
Cedar is a lightweight and dimensionally stable wood that lies flat and stays straight, which means it resists the natural tendency to crack and check as you might find in many other wood species. Its distinct cell structure discourages moisture rot by allowing it to dry out faster than outdoor furniture made from tropical hardwoods. Western Red Cedar is incredibly thermal coefficient, meaning even on hot days, it is cool to sit in. Its bacterial and fungal resistance coupled with the fact that Cedar is 80% the strength of Oak, makes it the most desirable wood to use for building outdoor furniture. Western Red Cedar fibres contain oils that act as natural preservatives to help the wood resist rot and decay making it excellent furniture material all climates.
